| Working on a Building......... | REB | 18-Jun-10 06:29 AM | Our group has been attempting to play Working on Building. It seems there may be two different songs by that title. We're talking about the gospel version. After listening to the Bill Monroe and the Allstars with Rob Ickes versions I'm convinced it's in a minor key. It may be our singer is trying to do in a major key so he can't get the melody right. Thanks for any info. REB registered |

I'm sure we'll work it out, after all, it's a minor problem.

| Working on a Building......... | SquareneckYank | 19-Jun-10 06:18 AM | Reb, the version I always have in my head is Tim O, and it's major. The thing is, the melody is kinda bluesy, so if you're playing the melody straight out (or thinking melodically as opposed to chordally), parts of it will be based on that bluesy/pentatonic/minor-ish scale and on paper that melody will look like minor.I'm guessing that ALL versions of the song are "gospel" though! registered |

I remembered backing up a preacher who sang it a long time ago and he sounded very much like Bill Monroe. It was quite a long time ago but i couldn't remember playing in a minor key. Your explanation may be right so i'll approach it from that idea. Thanks REB registered |
| Working on a Building......... | REB | 19-Jun-10 11:10 AM | Problem is solved. We found the version that Elvis Presley did and it matches what our singer was trying to do. The Bill Monroe version is a completely different song. Both versions just happen to have the same title. Thanks for all the input. REB registered |
| Working on a Building......... | Straycat | 20-Jun-10 02:23 PM | The best instrumental version of "Workin' on a Building" that I've ever seen was done solo by Irl Hees at the MACC festival in Columbus, OH. I don't remember if he was with Rhonda Vincent then or the LRB...but it just about knocked everybody out. You wouldn't think a bass player could do a 7 or 8 minute version of that song, but it was totally incredible. I think he has it on a CD that he put out some time ago. Don't know where or who he is playing with now. registered |

i'll see if i can find it somewhere. Which version is it? I would assume it's the version like Bill Monroe did.

| Working on a Building......... | Straycat | 21-Jun-10 07:29 PM | It sort of is, REB, it's all instrumental so it's a little hard to tell, but to the best of my recollection...it is. Just Google Irl Hees bass player or look at County Sales ...they have the CD and it's titled "I'm Just a Bass Player". No CD version will do justice to it like seeing him do it live though. That blew me away!

| Working on a Building......... | Straycat | 21-Jun-10 07:41 PM | WAIT! HOLD UP! STOP THE PRESSES!!! I made a mistake, REB....I apologize. I went to YouTube and looked under Irl Hees Workin' on a Building and there it was! He did it at the Doyle Lawson festival with the LRB and I was wrong about the instrumental part....he sings on it. He does the whole thing solo with just the bass and it's great, I think it is anyway. Check it out. Sorry about the mistake. registered |

| Working on a Building......... | LugCone37 | 22-Jun-10 03:20 PM | We don't put endings on our words in Kentucky, so the correct title of this tune is, I'm a Workin' on a Buildin' ... yea a holy ghost buildin', I'm a workin' on a buildin' for my Lord, for my Lord. registered |
