| jerrys mike imaging arua ? | dobrocop | 19-Jun-10 09:50 AM | Hi, Having watched the Aura Reso Demo on youtube i have a Qustion,.the dobros sounded great on the video,.but my question is about the Aura Mike Imaging technology,. How do they do a image of a mike that Jerry uses when its well known thet Jerry uses 2 mikes to get his sound!,.one mike is set at ear level pointing to the dobro and the other is 4 to 6 ins from top of dobro between sound holes and cone/spider,.he then mixes these to get his great sound,,.so is the Aura Image a blend of the 2 mikes?, and if i rem correctly they are 2 different mikes,.so How can that be right?,i have asked around forums on this and also asked Baird and Fishman and nobody has been able to answer this!,also i dont understand why theres only one Jerry Douglas Live demo of Aura Reso Pedal from some festival somewhere, but the sound is terrible coming from an on board camcorder Mike and filmed from the back/side stage,.this is not good promotion ,.why dosent Fishman/Baird/Douglas make a proper live demo and let us all hear what the pickup is capable of,.ok ,thanks for listening,.cheers, ted, dobrocop. registered |
| jerrys mike imaging arua ? | Erik | 19-Jun-10 06:39 PM | Each of the 16 mic images in the Aura Jerry Douglas pedal were created using a single mic. From Fishman's user guide for this pedal here's a list of the mics (and distances from the reso) used to create the images:
#1 - Neumann U67 large diaphragm tube condensor @ 12"
#2 - Neumann U67 @ 18"
#3 - RCA 77 ribbon @ 12"
#4 - RCA 77 ribbon @ 12" (with reso drop-tuned to CAFCAF)
#5 - Neumann M149 large diaphragm tube condensor @ 18"
#6 - Neumann M149 @ 12"
#7 - Crowley Tripp El Diablo ribbon @ 12"
#8 - Shure SM81 small diaphragm condensor @ 12"
#9 - Royer R-121 ribbon @ 12" (with reso drop-tuned to CAFCAF)
#10 - Neumann U47 large diaphragm tube condensor @ 12"
#11 - Neumann U47fet large diaphragm FET condensor @ 12"
#12 - Neumann U47fet @ 12" (with reso drop-tuned to CAFCAF)
#13 - Crowley Tripp Soundstage ribbon @ 12"
#14 - Neumann KM84 small diaphragm condensor @ 12"
#15 - Shure KSM32 medium diaphragm condensor @ 9"
#16 - Shure SM57 dynamic @ 12"

If you'd like to view a properly formatted version of the image list, and are a ResoNation member, I've just reposted this info in the "Practicing, Performing & Recording Gear" forum there.

| jerrys mike imaging arua ? | Erik | 20-Jun-10 05:39 AM | There's SEVERAL examples of Jerry using the Aura system while performing live available online. It's my understanding that for quite a while he's been using it nearly exclusively, without a mic, when performing live.
The dual mic configuration you've mentioned Jerry using is really only practical in a recording studio setting, not for live performances.

| jerrys mike imaging arua ? | MarkinSonoma | 20-Jun-10 08:59 AM | I'm wondering if Ted is referring in the first part of his post to Jerry using the microphones in the studio, because as you wrote Erik, it would be impractical to use this configuration in a live situation. registered |
| jerrys mike imaging arua ? | dobrocop | 21-Jun-10 08:52 AM | Yes Markim your right, thats my point exactly that if the 2 mike setup for studio is Jerry,s best sound then how can even He get his best sound with the aura using just 1 mike image,.i know that they prob picked a BEST [ compromise ] single mike sound because its not possible to do a 2 mike image ,.i do understand roughly this is not possible ,.and im not putting the Aura/Fishman system down cause i know its good if its as good as my AURA Dreadnought Pedal,.and again Jerry,s taste in sound and mikes in general is Exellent,.even his old stuff sounds like nobody else,.Perhaps this could be acheived bu using 2 seperate pedals with each set to the seperate mike images including the image of the Eye level Distance mike?then blending the 2 pedal images to acheive the incredible Douglas Studio sound,.OK , im going over the top here but its such a great new technology that it fires my imagination,.or maybe i should get out more???cheers people,.ted.dobrocop. registered |
| jerrys mike imaging arua ? | Erik | 21-Jun-10 10:33 AM | As an electronics engineer familiar with how Fishman creates the Aura mic images, I'm not aware of any technical reason why it wouldn't be possible to use a pair of mics when creating a mono image file that could be loaded into one of Fishman's Aura pedals... but would expect such an image to be of limited use in a live performance situation. A micing setup (and the resulting sound) that works "best" in a precisely controlled recording studio environment would very likely not be "best" for use at a live performance.
FWIW, I know that Fishman has created some stereo-pair Aura images using two mics which were then loaded into two Aura pedals and fed into a stereo sound reinforcement or recording system... but since nearly all PA systems are operated in mono rather than stereo these stereo-pair images would be of little use for most live performances.

| jerrys mike imaging arua ? | MarkinSonoma | 22-Jun-10 09:22 AM | Ted, there is plenty of footage of Jerry using the Aura beyond what I guess you are referring to as the Beard demo videos.
For starters, here is Alison and Shawn Colvin singing The Boxer at the Paul Simon tribute concert in Washington D.C. from I believe 2007 which was originally broadcast on public television, with Jerry on dobro using the Aura, no microphone:

And if you look to the right after viewing that one, you can see another one of them performing a version of Graceland that is slower and bluesier than Simon's original.

| jerrys mike imaging arua ? | MarkinSonoma | 23-Jun-10 11:41 AM | Jerry was using this thing in concert during the prototype phase well before it was released to the public. I saw him use it back in Oct., 2006 at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass with the JD Band, and I even discussed it with soundman Bernie Velluti after the set to get his reaction to the technology.
The keyword above is "prototype." I don't have any idea how close to the finalized version it was, but it was getting there. registered |
